Effect of Helix Angle on the Performance of Helical Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

The energy crisis has forced researchers to look for various non-conventional sources. Wind is one of the potential sources, and have invested resources in developing different kinds wind turbines. Vertical axis turbines (VAWT) received less attention than their horizontal-axis counterparts. A helical-bladed VAWT preferred because it makes perfect sense as an improvement design, they higher azimuth angles power generation capabilities. This paper studies effects helix angle blades aerodynamic performance using 3D numerical simulations. Three 60°, 90°, 120° a three-bladed operating across tip speed ratios were studied. Turbulence modelled four-equation transition SST k-? model (shear stress transport). 60° was found be better performing comparison with all other straight-bladed VAWT. ripple on shaft are also analysed standard deviation plot moment coefficient generated by single blade over complete cycle its rotation.
